Nira
Was born April 7, 1997 at Wolf Park. He was one of eight puppies born to Orca (then alpha male) and Altair (then alpha female). Nira was initially nicknamed "Stichy" as he required surgery for a congenetital defect.

He came to live at Wolf Timbers July 5, 1997. At first Nira was the alpha, and only, male of the pack. Then Ingo was introduced in the summer of 1999. In February 2002, Ingo managed to become the alpha male with Nira as the beta. Such is life in the pack.

Nira is a North American Gray Wolf weighing about 110 pounds. His black color phase confuses many people. Gray wolves come in a variety of color phases, not necessarily gray.

Nira amuses us by pushing over any object he can - this includes planks inside the enclosure we use to greet the wolves on. Nira is also known for playing tricks on us humans.

Although I have taken a lot of photos of Nira in the past, and took quite a number of him interacting with Ingo and Keeley during my last visit to Wolf Timbers on February 20, 2002, I only took one portrait of him. I guess I will have to go through my photos from years past and find some good ones to scan for the site :)
